Things to Consider When Selecting Your Wedding Flowers

Some questions to ask yourself when choosing your flowers.

The wedding day is a celebration of love and commitment, so it's only natural that you want it to be as perfect as it can be.  The flowers you choose are an important part of any wedding. It can be hard to know which flowers will suit your bouquet, centerpieces, reception tables, ceremony aisle, and other décor, so let me break it down for you.

The best way to start is by narrowing down your idea of what you want. Do you know if the bouquet will be traditional, or more modern? It is also helpful to research different types of flowers and which ones are in season. You will want to consider what colors will work best for your theme and personality, whether whimsical or sophisticated.

Here are some things to keep in mind when selecting your wedding flowers:

•Do they complement one another? Flowers often come in pairs—think roses with tulips or daffodils with lilacs—so look online or go see some at your local flower shop to make sure they go together beautifully.

•What's the color scheme? If your wedding has a specific color palette, such as pink and purple, or red, white, and green, or navy and silver, make sure you choose flowers of that hue to match.

•What about allergies? When thinking about which flowers to use in your arrangement or bouquet, keep in mind any allergic reactions that may occur.

•What about cost? Although it can be tempting to go with a cheaper option to allow more of your budget to go towards other things, you should keep in mind how important this event is when selecting what type of flowers to use. You want them to last as long as possible, so they look picture perfect during all of the day’s events. The more expensive option may be worth the investment.

•What time of year is your wedding? Flowers are seasonal and not all blooms will be available at the same time; for example, fresh roses might only be in season during spring while calla lilies bloom from early July through mid-October. Consider the season of your wedding when selecting blooms.

•What's the size of your wedding? A smaller, more intimate event might not require as many flowers; just a bouquet, a few arrangements around the venue, and some centerpieces. However, if it’s an outdoor affair with several hundred guests, then large-scale arrangements for all tables, in addition to the bouquet and ceremony aisle flowers, may be necessary.

•What type of flowers do you like? There is a variety to choose from, so take some time to explore the different options before placing your order; for example, if you love roses and peonies, then select those as your main focus and find complementary flowers to fill out your arrangements.

There are several things to keep in mind when selecting your wedding flowers. How you plan the event will determine which types of flowers you need, but it's also important to consider how they'll complement one another or what colors work best for your personality and theme. Considerations like these will help ensure that the day is as perfect as possible!
