Get to know Cantor Daniel Pincus

My goal is to always provide you with quality experiences and performance in every area - Jewish weddings, Jewish worship services, b'nei mitzvah training, funeral services, classical music singing, music education, and shofar lessons.

My career began as a singer of classical music, but all the while was drawn to the psychological, the sacred, the spiritual. Becoming a Cantor in midlife, I served several congregations, but, by choice, no longer do so. For five years, my employment was a Spiritual Support Counselor both at a major NYC rehab and nursing home facility, where I led drum circles. Also, I worked a few years in a hospice. Now, I lead classical music and arts programs for seniors, perform weddings and Jewish worship services, and something else quite unusual, described below.

When I am not singing, leading music appreciation classes for seniors, or performing cantorial duties, I enjoy many activities, including cooking, working out, reading, and researching nutrition & metabolism.

Recordings

Cantor Pincus can be heard on the soundtrack of the film “Antisemitism” which plays at the beginning of the exhibit at the National Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.  He was also a long-time member of the Alhambra Ensemble, which performs Sephardic music which has performed at The Town Hall.

Tenor Daniel sang on “Jane’s Hand,” a collection of Jane Austen’s favorite vocal works organized by Julianne Baird; on “King David’s Lyre,” psalm settings by George Frederick Handel, and on “The Songs of Solomon,” vol.1, a recording of Salomone Ross L’Ebreo’s Baroque synagogue choral music.  He’s also been a member of The Mantua Singers, a group of cantors and Jewish singers conducted by Matthew Lazar, which showcases the music of Rossi.  He’s written translations and program notes for concerts of Rossi’s music.

Spiritual Support

Dan has also worked in “spiritual support” at the Jewish Home and Hospital in Manhattan, and for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York Hospice Program.  While at the Jewish Home, he developed a therapeutic drum circle, to the delight of the residents, patients, family members and staff.  He led drum circles at the Nursing Home of the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx and at the Allen Pavilion Hospital, part of New York Presbyterian Hospital.

No longer active in congregational pulpits, he does continue to lead Shabbat and other Jewish services and classical music programs at senior residential centers such as Atria and Sunrise.  He’s known for bringing his middle eastern drum, the darbuka, or tof, to accompany the rhythmic songs;  he has the residents play along with maracas.  They love it! When these programs were postponed due to COVID, he continued to engage with the adult children of some of the residents in weekly Zoom Torah study of the Book of Proverbs.

Shofar Matters

Over the years, I have become an enthusiast and scholar of the shofar, particularly about how to sound it beautifully and accurately.

Pictured here was the group that gathered for a "Shofaron," a study session dedicated to the study of Shofar, the Jewish sacred horn. I am proud to have coined this term Shofaron, never before used.

In short, Dan Pincus --
Cantor Daniel Pincus -- brings a wealth of musical, cultural, religious, and now, scientific interests to bear on whatever he does.
